A Gaddi Groom in Traditional Wedding Dress (Kad)

Here is a picture of a Gaddi Groom in the traditional wedding dress of the Gaddi (Pahari) community. This long dress is called Kad. I got a chance to take this picture during a Gaddi marriage attending me recently. Despite being from Himachal Pradesh, this was a new experience for me and I saw many traditions. This picture clearly represents the rich culture of Himachal Pradesh.

The gaddi women or the Gaddans have chiseled features and are known for their perseverance, probity, courage and high moral character. They look beautiful in their traditional apparel and ethnic ornaments. They adorn themselves with laung, balls, bear, Mathieu, chuck-phullian, chanderhaar, gojru, hockey, Jai mala, chili and heavy silver necklace which add grace to their beauty.

A wedding in a gaddi household is a gala occasion, which is marked by joy-de-Vivre, vivacity, and merry-making. The gardens especially look forward to weddings as it gives them an opportunity to dance and sing. Any festive occasion in a gaddi household is considered a lackluster affair without dance and music. Men and women vie with each other to perform group dances, including Natti, a popular gaddi folk dance. The entire valley reverberates with the beat of pulsating folk music. The gaddi Natti and danger dance are very popular dances in Himachal Pradesh.
